The Big Rock Candy Mountain

This is my Step-grandmother Mary she was a part of my life when I was very young . Mary grew up in a very small town down south called Joseph. I knew that when ever she went down home for a visit that when she would return she would bring all of us kids candy from the Big Rock Candy Mountain. I would have dreams about this wonderful place and what it would look like. And after hearing the old song about it, it was a place all children would love to live.
After I was married I soon found out that my husband grandparents lived on the other side of Joseph and once I found that out it was my dream to go see this magical place. Well all I can say is in my eyes it was a big disappointment not that the beauty that surrounds this area itself is worth the trip but when you go expecting a mountain made out of candy it can be a little disappointing. One weekend my son JD had major truck failure when he Jennifer and Alex had gone down to Escalante which turned into an unexpected trip for us to go pick them up and tow them back home. So on the way back we stopped and let Alex go see what this magical place looked like, he to was crushed to see that the Lemon-aide Springs had dried up.

Alex and JD hiking up you guessed it the Lemon-aide Springs

the cigarette trees

This could look like a big carmel

The surrounding area is breath taking

It once was more than it is now! I remember those trips and nagging Dad and Mary to take me over there. Like every kid, I mostly wanted a souvenir and the candy. Thanks for reminding me of these times. And it's nice of you to do an entry on Mary.

I have never heard of this. I love the little Clip. I will have to add this to things I want to see.

I totally agree about the disappointment. I was even more disappointed when we bought the rock candy from the store and every piece tasted like coffee. To a little kid it was serious.

Didn't know anything about the 'Candy Mountain' but the photos are certainly gorgeous and totally Utah.

Clydene,....I am so glad you posted something about Grandma Mary. I started a post on her myself the other day when I found her picture I sent to you that was used in your post. I will just comment here really quick.
She too was a BIG part of my life. I got to spend the night with Susan quite often. When I was there on a Saturday night staying with her, Grandma would put our hair up so that we would look nice for church on Sunday. She also knew that tomato juice was my favorite and would always give me a jar of it for Christmas. I remember Christmas time at Grandpa and Grandma Mary's when she along with Susan and I would make cookies and candy for the holiday, like devinity, peanut brittle, etc. Another thing she did that I will always remember is she would read us a story out of the 'Children's Friend' magazine. I also remember there were always 'nap' times there too at a certain time of the day. And I always looked forward to the rock candy she would bring home from Joseph when she went down for a visit. She also wrote in my autograph book I made in primary one year and is something I will always cherish. I have very FOND memories of her, and I only mentioned a very few.
